Living with dogs means a constant battle with dog hair and so we’re always looking for tools and tricks to make the battle a little less painful. That’s why we were super excited to give the Dyson DC65 a whirl. The last time we tested a Dyson we were thoroughly impressed, so we  had high hopes for the new DC65 before we even laid eyes on it.

The DC65 Animal claims to clean better than any other vacuum across carpets and hard floors. It also claims twice the suction of any other vacuum which should make sucking up those pesky pet hairs a cinch. The DC65 comes with the Tangle-Free Turbine tool, which has counter-rotating heads that pick up hair, clump it together, and dump it right into the bin. No need to cut off tangled hair from a brush bar.

As with previous Dysons, we were very happy with the quality of the parts. Of course, as with the last Dyson, it took this tester a few tries to figure out where everything went.

So here’s what literature says:

Radial Root Cyclone™ technology. Designed to maximize suction power. A mesh shroud separates large debris, while inner cyclones generate powerful centrifugal forces – extracting microscopic particles like pollen and mold.

Twice the suction of any other vacuum.* Remodeled airflows ensure even higher suction – up to 180 air watts – to remove dirt, dust, and allergens from the home.

25% more brushbar power. Shorter, stiffer bristles aggravate the carpet pile to remove more dust and dirt.

Self-adjusting cleaner head. Cleaner heads on most vacuums need to be adjusted for different floor types. Dyson’s base plate automatically adapts to every floor surface, creating a continuous seal to remove dust from hard floors and carpets, while protecting delicate surfaces.

Turns on a dime. More key technologies are housed inside the ball, reducing components on the outside of the machine, and making it even easier to steer under and around furniture.

Close edge pick-up, thanks to a slim frame on the cleaner head’s soleplate.

Instant release hose and wand. No catches or parts to assemble, it reaches the top of the stairs.

Tangle-free Turbine. Counter-rotating heads with brushes remove hair and dirt from upholstery.

*Suction tested against upright market to ASTM F558 at the cleaner head, dust loaded as per IEC 60312-1.

So what do we say?

It takes awhile to get used to maneuvering the “ball,” but we love almost everything about this vacuum. One of the things we disliked about the DC28 we tested several years ago was that the base of the vacuum was so large it didn’t fit under short tables or the edge of the bed. That problem is solved with the DC65. This vacuum will go practically anywhere.

Although the vacuum does adapt seamlessly from carpet to hardwood, you have to manually push a button to get the brush to spin over carpet. Lots of attachments mean you can use the DC65 Animal to clean just about anywhere. We especially love the Tangle-free Turbine tool that can be used to easily clean hair from couches and chairs.

If you’re looking for a versatile, lightweight, high-power vacuum, the Dyson DC65 Animal is a no-brainer. Dyson invests over $200 million every year in developing new technology and it shows. The Dyson we got back in 2009 is still running like a champ, but we’re going to have to retire it in favor of the DC65. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure our old DC28 gets a good home.
