Cold weather tips for pet parents

Cold Weather Pet Safety Tips Every Pet Parent Should Know

When temperatures drop, our pets rely on us to keep them safe, comfortable, and healthy. Cold weather brings unique risks from icy paws to hidden toxins. A little preparation goes a long way. Here are some simple tips to help protect your pets during the colder months.

Limit time outdoors.
Even pets with thick coats can suffer from hypothermia or frostbite. Keep outdoor walks shorter in extreme cold, and never leave pets unattended outside. Puppies, senior pets, and those with short coats are especially vulnerable.

Protect paws from ice and chemicals.
Ice, snow, and de-icing products can irritate paws and cause injury. Wipe your pet’s feet after walks to remove salt and chemicals, and check for cracks or redness. Pet-safe booties or paw balm can provide extra protection.

Watch out for antifreeze.
Antifreeze is highly toxic and has a sweet taste that attracts pets. Clean up spills immediately and store chemicals securely. If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze, seek veterinary care right away—this is a true emergency.

Provide warm, dry shelter.
If your pet spends any time outdoors, make sure they have access to a warm, dry, and insulated shelter protected from wind and moisture. Bedding should be thick and dry. When possible, bring pets indoors during freezing temperatures.

Adjust food and water.
Pets may burn more calories in cold weather, especially if they’re active outdoors. Talk with your veterinarian about whether your pet needs additional food. Always ensure fresh, unfrozen water is available.

Mind heaters and fireplaces.
Space heaters, fireplaces, and heating vents can pose burn risks. Keep pets at a safe distance and use screens or guards when necessary. Check heated blankets carefully and never leave them unattended with pets.

Dress for the weather.
Sweaters or jackets can help smaller dogs or short-haired breeds stay warm during walks. Make sure clothing fits properly and doesn’t restrict movement.

Cold weather can be beautiful but it also requires extra care. By taking a few thoughtful steps, you can help ensure your pets stay safe, warm, and happy all winter long.
