Toys for Tough Chewers

My dogs love toys. I love to give them toys. But that joy lasts all of about five minutes, ten if I’m lucky, as my dogs rip those toys to shreds. What’s a dog mom to do? You can’t get angry at the dogs. They chew those toys because of a natural prey instinct. That toy is the prey and they are going to catch it and rip it open looking for food. Some dogs have a higher prey drive than others, hence, the tough chewers.

There are three tried and true toys I love to get my dogs. They are not indestructible, but they do give you a lot of bang for your buck.

Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Recycleball

Planet Dog rates their toys on a “chomper” scale. A score of one out of five chompers means the toy is for light chewers. But a five out of five chompers is durable enough to challenge those tough chewers. The Recycleball is great because it’s made from scraps of other Planet Dog products. The scraps would normally be thrown away as useless, but Planet Dog regrinds them and uses them to make the RecycleBALL. To order or find a retailer near you visit www.planetdog.com.

Deer Antlers

A lot of people get sticker shock when they see the price of deer antlers. They cost anywhere from $8.00 for a small antler upwards to $20.00 for a large piece. Don’t be scared by the price! Dogs love to chew these antlers and they will last for at least a month, if not longer. When you look at it that way, it’s actually a bargain. And don’t worry about the deer — these antlers are naturally shed so no deer are harmed in the process. The deer antlers pictured here can be found at www.dailygrommet.com. You can also find deer antlers at many local pet shops.

Fluff n Tuff

These fluffy fun toys are my absolute favorite. The first time I laid eyes on “Rocket the Racoon” the saleswoman told me he was tough to destroy. I looked at her with a “sure, uh-huh” face and told her she didn’t know my tough chewers. We were on vacation and people buy silly things when on vacation, so I bought the racoon anyway. I knew it would not be with us long. But it turns out that saleswoman was right. Rocket the Racoon lasted five months in our house. I was amazed and I recommend these toys to everyone! You can order them online at www.fluffandtuff.com or find them at your local retailer.
