Way back in the campaign, presidential candidate Barack Obama promised his two girls that win or lose, after the election the family would get a dog. The American Kennel Club was wooing the family and held a national vote to see what breed Americans thought the Obamas should get. A poodle was the winner.
At the same time, Best Friends Animal Society put together a petition asking the Obamas to consider adoption, instead of purchasing a dog from a breeder. 50,000 people signed the petition and this week on television, Michelle Obama announced that her family will adopt – not buy – a dog after the election. That’s a big win for shelter dogs everywhere!
